Child Development II

This course will continue exploring ages and stages of child development with concentration on language, emotional, social and moral development. It will study interactions with children and families to scaffold learning and move development forward. It will review current societal trends and the special developmental, physical and familial needs of young children in order to prepare a responsive environment for children and families.

Assignments:

1. Due 10-29-08
Ages and Stages Exploration Project and Presentation
The Ages and Stages will be explored from Early Childhood through Middle Childhood in the areas noted above. Students will have the opportunity to choose one area to research,
organize and present information on one of the following trends in development: Linguistic,
Social, Emotional, or Moral.

2. Due 11-5-08
Learning and Teaching Analysis
Based on learning theories, students will write a short paper responding to specific questions
which analyze personal teaching style in the classroom and make suggestions for personal
growth. Discuss learning styles and temperaments. What is yours and how does it affect your
teaching?

3. Due 11-12-08
Individual Case Study: Intelligence and Learning Styles
Students will be asked to select one child (with permission) observe and document learning
and development over a three week period in various settings. The goal of the project is to
create a “learning profile” for the child by observing the child, interviewing parents and
teachers, interacting with the child, and collecting samples of work. The case study (6-8
pages) will reflect on individual growth and the child’s learning style. The case study
assignment will be assessed on research techniques and data collection specifics of the child’s
motor, cognitive, language, social and moral development; your analysis of the data,
interpretation and application to the classroom.
4. Due 11-19-08….
in-class presentation Current Trends Presentation
Student will prepare a brief presentation for the class on a special needs area which
significantly affects the development of children in our society. The presentation should
provide information as well as a user-friendly visual reference for the class. This handout
should be visually appealing and include background information, practical tips, and a
resource section including books/periodicals for children/parents/teachers, web sites, etc. A
brochure or newsletter format is suggested.

Album Preparation
Students will continue to assemble the album that they began in Part One.
Relevant class notes are to be placed at the beginning of each section. Criteria for assessment
include: Organization, Completeness and Self-Reflection.
